Focus on What You Want

Vision

What does the word ‘visionary’ mean to you?

What is a visionary? And how does one become one?

A visionary is open to possibility and the idea that what they envision in their mind is a real potential in this physical world.  It takes being able to believe in something when evidence has not yet shown you how it will manifest.  It takes courage as you will have naysayers that won’t believe in you and what you are creating.

I believe everyone has within them a visionary.  They can achieve greatness and impact the world.

For business-owners and founders, the first step is to achieve clarity on the vision.  Why did you create this business?  Allow what you want out of the business to flourish in your mind.  When you play with the end goal in mind; like moulding clay into a form, you can easily change it until it is right.  When it changes, that is okay.

It starts with the questions:

  • What is your end goal?

  • How will you serve the world?

I have meetings with clients daily where we are cultivating and clarifying their vision.

If you’re unsure of what the next step is; clarity on your why is the next step.

The actions, logical steps, and so forth come after we take care of this vision.  Steps that appear bold to others are no longer bold to you when you are clear on where you are going.

Become the visionary you know you are.

Accountability & Deadlines

Have you ever had a task given to you and you not do it? We all have. For whatever the reason we did not do it.  The important thing is that you determine what made you complete the tasks you did complete.

The tasks you did usually were one or all: relatively easy, fun to accomplish, you were sure of the outcome when you finished them, and they didn’t push you into the unknown.

This is where accountability comes in.  The power of accountability is that it gives you pressure within yourself to do something you were avoiding before.

Forms of accountability maybe you not wanting to disappoint someone else or a group whose opinion you care about, a financial reason, but with accountability, it is a consequence related to not accomplishing something.

With coaching, we will only ask you to do tasks you agree to commit to and that you feel they are for your benefit.  If something doesn’t feel right, we’ll review the situation to determine a potential resolution.

The benefit is that it allows you to accomplish more than you have an idea and hoping that the idea comes to fruition. By you putting energy and focus and attention towards it, it will increase chances of completion.

All a deadline does is gives you a time frame from which you can finish the goal. The important thing with time frames and deadlines is that you regularly keep them in front of you so you naturally feel the desire to move forward with them. You will feel natural pressure to move forward to carry out them.

When you have someone holding you accountable with a deadline, it is a powerful combination.  If you wish to get help with this, reach out to me and schedule your first meeting.

Goals & Pivoting

You always hear of goals and how they are crucial to your success.

While I agree they are important, they are useless unless you understand the pivot.

Take the analogy of a car trip & and your business: The starting destination is where your company is today.  The final destination is your company goals.  Once you’re on your trip and you make a wrong turn, you adjust.  With business, they call this a pivot.  You find out something isn’t working; you make adjustments and continue.

The path isn’t a straight line, with twists & turns around obstacles come in the way.  If you can realize setbacks are lessons for your business and you can grow from them, you can adjust and move forward.

The challenge businesses face is they have too much invested in areas need to make adjustments.

Once you are comfortable with the pivot, your business will become much more nimble and able to make quick changes and adjust to the marketplace.

Is this new for you?  If so, let’s schedule a meeting to talk.

Cheerleader & Positive Reinforcement

Part of my job is fun and I enjoy is being a positive cheerleader and supporter for your goals, objectives, and your vision.

This is one reason I have the initial consultation.  I only want a working relationship with someone I can see their vision and believe in them.  After one meeting we can discern if we are a good fit.  We need our energy and focus to be in harmony.

That being said, the support is often one reason people hire me.  Many people don’t surround themselves with people supportive of them and their mission.

One of my objectives in coaching is to help people to realise their own greatness.  I will, with permission, suggest methods that can help to build one’s confidence and help them know their unlimited potential.

I am My Biggest Critic

For most of you reading this article, this is true.

The question you should ask: ‘Is being my biggest critic beneficial for me?’

I would argue a definite that it is a definite yes if you are framing how you are being critical of yourself.

First, those providing feedback in your life from the outside are far less influential to your subconscious mind the way you talk to yourself, your ‘self-talk’.  Re-reread that last sentence, it is that important.  Ask yours, how is my self-talk now?

Are you asking yourself questions or having inner dialogue like:

What did I do that?

That was stupid.

That was a mistake.

Only a loser would do that.

Only a failure would make that mistake.

(you get the picture)

Each of these is a question that will get answered by your subconscious or will be a statement you teach your subconscious who you feel you are should be.

Even if you say to yourself ‘Only a loser would do that.’ or ‘That was stupid.’  Your subconscious mind edits it to mean you are the loser or you are stupid.

What happens if you re-frame those statements? What if your inner critic had something positive or supportive to say?

New and re-framed inner dialogue statements or questions could be:

What can I learn from this?

That was an interesting result.

That was surprising feedback.

This is an interesting challenge.

I wonder what I can learn from this?

How can I grow from this?

I’m amazing at sales.

How will this opportunity lead to more?

I’m a great leader.

You get the picture.

Try it right now.  Think of a challenge or something you feel less than confident about.

Make this a daily habit to talk to yourself with whom you are and who you know yourself to be and repeat it, like a mantra, in your head or out loud.  This simple habit alone can change your world for the better.

Be your biggest critic.

Question everything, but frame it with an aim and constructive critique.

You’ll notice success hitting you from all sides.  Good luck with that new challenge!

Failure Is A Necessity For Success

Have you ever heard the stories about people whom you may admire or respect and the list of failures and setbacks they had?

If you have not, please look up the story of United States President Abraham Lincoln, Apple founder Steve Jobs, or arguably the most powerful woman the world today, Oprah Winfrey. There are many more examples but these are three where greatness and change came from seemingly insurmountable challenges.

Why is it that we hear over and over in our life about people overcoming such challenges?

The reason is very clear:

Failure is a necessity for success in your life and business.

But, how can this be? I was taught my whole life that failing was bad and that this did not lead to a successful life?  Whether from pure ignorance or done intentionally, this entire mindset is completely incorrect. And if you don’t believe me, I respect that completely, and I ask that you consider trying to replace the words noted below with the suggested ones for 30 days.

And if you forget, don’t beat yourself up, simply state what you meant to say and move on.  Our inner dialogue is more powerful than almost anything else.  Want to learn more about this

From a coaching perspective, one of the things I will do it immediately is to teach you to reframe your inner & outer dialogue.

I want you to quickly replace the following words:

Failure

Setbacks

Defeat

Loss

…you understand where I’m going.

With these words:

Opportunities

Challenges

Feedback

Lesson

Pivot

Result

Why?  Your mind will look at a result entirely differently.

It will be reframed for success, enforcing the inner power that is you, and taking you to new levels of greatness in your life.

Keep with this, again for 30 days, if you are up for the challenge.  Wait and see as opportunities literally are exploding around you to get their attention.

Coach vs Consultant vs Therapist

All three help the client with where they want to go.  They’re all valid and amazing professions and serve a purpose.

The question my firm receives is: What are you and what are you not?

First of all, we offer both coaching and consulting services.  We work with different clients in different capacities, but always make sure people understand the differences between them.

Hopefully this brief Q&A will help:

When in your life are they focused?

A therapist takes you into the past to help you to go where you want to go.  A coach and consultant are more focused in the now and future you.

Professional degree?

A therapist is a medical professional and therefore requires a professional degree.  Coaches & consultants are not medical professionals.  Coaches & consultants may have degrees or certificates, but these are not a legal requirement.

What are the primary differences between a coach and a consultant?

Consultants are very problem and solution focused.  A company comes to them and wants results with a challenge they are faced with.  The consultant determines, with various means, the challenge and possible ways to resolve it, and gives them steps to correct the issue.  Whether they actually implement the steps they outline is entirely up to the relationship and investment in the consultant.

A coach asks you to suggest the areas you feel are the most important and focus there. Then the coach would ask questions to help you refine the challenge, where you want to go and your vision, and help you determine the best steps to get you there.  Then the coach would support you in achieve them and hold you accountable towards them.  Trust and a longer-term relationship are more common for coaches and their clientele.  Also, in the coaching/client relationships, objectives may change and the coach simply pivots the focus to the new desired outcome.  Change is a natural and welcome part of life and the coach understands that.
